Nuovo da RGM Watch Company: Pro Aviator e "Baseball in smalto"

Deaumar Ensign and Chronova

I reviewed the Deaumar Ensign prototype just before its launch in February. I liked its looks and declared it to be an impressive value, but despite my doubtless invaluable endorsement, it failed to fund on Kickstarter. Fortunately, Deaumar continued pre-sales on its own and secured enough to see it through to production. Now, Ensigns are shipping out to their owners and a new model, the Chronova, is on its way. In anticipation of the launch, Deaumar sent me a new blue Ensign and a prototype Chronova for review.

Ensign

Like the prototype, the final version is a 200m dress diver with a Seiko 4R36 automatic in a 42mm stainless steel case. Features include a screw down crown, domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and a solid link bracelet with a signed clasp. Short, integrated lugs keep the length to a compact 46mm, which makes for a tidy fit on smaller wrists without sacrificing presence. I was taken with the shimmering blue dial and plodded markers on the prototype and the final is no different. The final watch stays true to the prototype but has been upgraded with solid end links, a solid two-piece clasp, and it trades the printed aluminum bezel insert for glossy, engraved ceramic.

Deaumar had always planned for solid links, but the ceramic was a later addition. It vastly improves the watch. There is nothing inherently bad about aluminum, but I have grown to love the slick look and high scratch resistance of ceramic. My only real criticism of the prototype was the fat font printed in silver on the bezel. The new insert does away with this. The engraved markers are better proportioned than the old ones, and the white color is a better match to the markers on the dial.

Of course, the price has changed as well. You could pre-order the Ensign for £131 GBP, or about $189 USD at the time. The watch is now £249 GBP, which thanks to a favorable exchange rate, is just over $403 USD. Perhaps not the bargain it was before, but still a fair price for a satisfying watch.

Chronova

Now, let's move on to the new one. Like its stablemate, it uses a Seiko movement, but this time it is the VK63 MechaQuartz, a popular hybrid movement that marries a quartz timekeeper to a mechanical chronograph module. This combination yields a reliable, inexpensive movement with a smooth, 1/5 second sweep and crisp snap back on reset.

The stainless steel case measures 42mm wide and 51mm long. Its upper surface is brushed, the sides and bezel are polished, and a polished chamfer cuts along the the outer edge of the curved lugs. I like a combination of brushed and polished finishes, and this is no exception, but I would have preferred brushed sides to highlight like right chamfer. Long lugs make it wear slightly larger than the Ensign, but one would hardly call it oversized. I found it perfectly comfortable on my 6.5" wrist, and had no difficulty wearing it with a buttoned cuff. The crown is signed, and an engraving of a LeMans racer decorates the case back.

Chronographs are sports watches, so while I do not expect the same degree of toughness found in dive or tool watches, I do appreciate it when they can take some lumps. The Chronova meets the standard with a sapphire crystal and 100m water resistance. The Chronova's H-link bracelet is nearly identical to the Ensign's. Of course, the end links are a different shape, but they share the same finish combination, solid links, and split link pins. It is 22mm wide, tapering to a 20mm signed clasp. Like the Ensign prototype, the preproduction Chronova has folded end links that will be upgraded in production.

Deaumar offers the Chronova in several colors, including a stealthy PVD black, but I requested a gold dial with a red and blue tachymeter index, a color scheme commonly associated with the beloved Seiko 6139-6002 worn by Colonel William Pogue on an 84-day NASA space mission. Not coincidentally, the gold Chronova is called "Pogo." An applied and polished logo and baton markers with beveled ends lend welcome dimension to the face. Deaumar's 1920's style typeface carries this treatment particularly well. Blue index rings surround the three sub dials. Baton hands are polished, and lume filled, while the second hand and sub dial needles are bright red. A framed, black-on-white date window tucks in at 4:30, a placement that does not interfere with an of the other elements. Overall, it is a successful design, effectively marrying the sporty red and blue elements with the fancier metallic gold and bright work.

Alex McBride Only Sells His Watches On the Fifth of Each Month

What inspired you to start with watches for The 5TH?
I’ve always been really interested in both fashion and design, and wanted to be involved in the industry in some way. It’s pretty tough to break into though, as a lot of designers know. So I wanted to create something that was appealing to a broad audience, something that people could actually use in a functional manner – rather than just wearing an item for show. Watches ticked all the right boxes. They also reminded me of my grandfather; he gave me his own watch for my 18th birthday – a relic to remember to keep hustling while young.
How much of The 5TH is a direct reflection of your personal style?
All of it, hopefully! I’m a pretty minimal guy – as cliche as it sounds, I don’t necessarily follow trends or wear ‘loud’ fashion. One of the most awesome aspects of what we do is that we get to design exactly the kind of products that we ourselves, would wear and use. We just got some brand new samples in the office and the team went nuts over them – it’s a great feeling when everyone genuinely backs the design and style.

Every entrepreneur has that “Eureka!” moment that lights a fire under them to create. What was your moment?
I would actually say it was the opposite of a Eureka moment – I’ve always been a ‘creator’ of sorts so it was more of a “slowly adding fuel to a burning fire” thing for me, if I’m honest. I had started my career with a property focus but I was running a small design blog on the side. It evolved slowly into collaborating with other creatives on ideas and little projects, which is where the The 5TH concept eventually sparked from.
The 5TH has a unique business model and a “limited time only” approach to selling products. Where did the decision to run a business that only sells the product for five days come from?
We’re strangely taken by the number five. It’s the numeral we abide by for everything – like, we’ve even got five office puppies (kidding).
The idea came from that limited approach model itself. We wanted our products to feel exclusive, without being slapped with the label of expensive. That’s not our style. So rather than being exclusive in a flashy cost way, it’s all about time – you’ve gotta make the most of your time while the store is open. It was a big risk to take, for sure. But then again, we’re all about taking risks.
So outside of the five-day window that you’re selling the product, are your customers foaming at the mouth and clawing at your door awaiting their next opportunity to purchase?
Haha. Our 5TH fam members are all about making the most of every moment – instead of products being in and out of stock all the time, our customers know that on the 5th of every month for five days, they can purchase from the online store to their heart’s content (or, you know, until we run out).
Do you think that The 5TH’s exclusivity factor helps to create a loyal client base?
Loyalty is something we hope to gain through our approach to business and life, rather than through products, exclusively. And we don’t want blind loyalty, either. It goes both ways, really, and loyalty to the customer is our primary concern. It’s that  ‘you give respect to get respect’ kind of deal and by loving what we do and sharing that love with our fans, we get it back.

 In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in minimalist fashion. Why do you think people are flocking to a more stripped down approach to style, and how is The 5TH standing out?
It’s that classic case of style versus trend, don’t you think? Trends change; that’s part of the fashion game. We try to strike a balance between the two. And it’s really cool that people respond to that.
What was your inspiration for your latest collection, The Tokyo collection? I would assume it’s Japanese culture, specifically in Tokyo, but I don’t want to assume.
The range is more of an homage to Tokyo, rather than an attempt to replicate or mimic anything in particular. We love everything about Tokyo and wanted to celebrate and show that love subtly. After   a recent trip there, we noticed how Tokyo is this magical blend of avant-garde and tradition – the fit was so natural and we wondered why we hadn’t thought of it earlier.
Are there any plans to expand The 5TH beyond watches and bags? Will we see The 5TH apparel in the future or The 5TH travel accessories?

The Best Vintage Rolex to Own

While contemporary Rolex models feature the latest and greatest technologies, many collectors choose vintage references for their rarity, and one-of-a-kind characteristics. Although there are many excellent Rolex references available, we have put together a list of the top-10 vintage Rolex for collectors to own.

1. Reference 4113 Split-Seconds Chronograph (circa 1942) – Just twelve of these watches were ever made, and only eight have surfaced. At 44mm in diameter, the reference 4113 is remarkably large by Rolex standards – especially considering the year that it was manufactured. As the only split-seconds chronograph ever produced by Rolex – and with a production run on just twelve units, the reference 4113 is beyond collectable, and examples have sold for over a million dollars when they surface at auction.

2. Reference 3346 Zerographe (circa 1937) – As the first Rolex to ever feature an in-house chronograph movement, and as the first ever to employ the use of a rotating bezel, the reference 3346 is the precursor to many of Rolex's most iconic design traits. With no official mention of it anywhere in Rolex's literature, the Zerographe is more of a refined test concept than a design intended for sale to the public. It is believed that between seven and twelve reference 3346 were produced, and only four examples are known to still be in existence.

3. Reference 6200 “Big Crown” Submariner (circa 1955) – The reference 6200 was not the first Submariner that Rolex ever produced; however it is probably the most sought after by collectors. The reference 6200 pre-dates the Submariner name, and the over-sized crown sets it apart from other Submariner references from the same time period.

4. Reference 6263 “Paul Newman” Daytona (early 1970's) – With all the attention being paid to Rolex's new, ceramic Daytona, one must look to the iconic watch from which it takes its design cues. The new, black cerachrom bezel is quite reminiscent of the black acrylic insert that was fitted to the reference 6263 Daytona. Although quite a few different dial designs were produced, Newman dials exist in just white and black, and exponentially increase the value of the watch.

5. Reference 6542 GMT-Master with Bakelite Bezel (circa 1954) – As the first GMT-Master ever produced by Rolex, the reference 6542 represents the beginning of one of Rolex's most iconic lines of watches. The reference 6542 lacks crown guards, setting it apart from later versions of the GMT-Master; however the real treat for vintage collectors is the ultra-rare, original Bakelite bezel insert (assuming that it has not been replaced).

6. Reference 6541 Milgauss (circa 1958) – The reference 6541 Milgauss is the first antimagnetic timepiece ever produced by Rolex, and its lackluster initial sales have made original examples quite rare today. Unlike later versions of the Milgauss, the reference 6541 more closely resembles an early Submariner, and features a rotating bezel that could be used as a rudimentary timer.

7. Reference 6204 Submariner (circa 1954) – As the first Submariner ever produced, the reference 6204 is instantly collectable. Much like the reference 6200, the reference 6204 pre-dates the Submariner name (and crown guards); however it lacks the addition of an oversized crown. The Submariner is Rolex's most iconic line of watches, and the reference 6204 is the watch that started it all.

8. Reference 5100 Beta 21 (circa 1970) – The reference 5100 Beta 21 was Rolex's first quartz watch ever, as well as the first Rolex to be fitted with a sapphire crystal. The movement inside the reference 5100 (the Beta-21), was jointly developed by twenty-one Swiss watch manufacturers, and was the first Rolex to feature a hacking feature and a quickset date. The reference 5100 was limited to just 1,000 pieces, and owners were invited to visit the Rolex plant in Switzerland for a tour of the factory.

9. Reference 1655 Explorer II (circa 1971) – First released in 1971, and intended specifically for speleologists, the reference 1655 Explorer II was initially a flop with the public, despite several celebrity endorsements. Much like the reference 6541 Milgauss, poor, initial sales numbers for the reference 1655 are responsible for its current rarity. While many generations of Explorer II have been produced, the dial of the reference 1655 is entirely unique to its generation, and makes the watch a true classic.

10. Reference 1665 Sea-Dweller (circa 1967) – While the Submariner is Rolex's official dive watch; the Sea-Dweller is the dive watch designed with the professional diver in mind. The helium gas escape valve allows the pressure inside the watch to equalize to its surroundings, enabling users to use it for saturation diving. While the Submariner is Rolex's most popular and iconic watch, the reference 1655 Sea-Dweller was created by Rolex to one-up the Submariner, which is why it deserves the final spot on our list.
